Gallia County has Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA's) that are subject to periodic inundation which may result in loss of life & property, health & safety hazards, disruption of commerce & governmental services, extraordinary public expenditures for flood protection & relief, and impariment of the tax base. Additionally, structures that are inadequately elevated, flood proofed, or otherwise protected from flood damage also contribute to the flood loss. In order to minimize these threats, Gallia County joined the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) in 1989: and subsequently adopted floodplain development regulations that same year.
