On the 14th. day of December, 1944, the Gallia Soil Conservation District was organized by the approval of the Ohio Soil Conservation Committee. The first supervisors were: Finley Richards, Chairman; Ralph Davis, Vice-Chairman; O. J. White, Treasurer; Glenn Powell, Secretary; and Frank Mills Jr.
On November 8, 1963 the Ohio Soil and Water Conservation Committee approved a petition to change the District’s name to the Gallia Soil and Water Conservation District.
The five elected, unpaid supervisors are responsible for developing and prioritizing the soil and water conservation efforts in the county and obtaining and dispersing funds. The Board of Supervisors consist of Gallia County residents elected to staggered three year terms.
The Gallia SWCD is funded by the Gallia County Commissioners, matching funds from the Ohio Soil and Water Conservation Commission, equipment rentals, tree packet sales, plat book sales, and various other grants and programs.
