Firminator G3 Food Plot Machine

The Firminator G-3 has arrived at the Gallia Soil & Water Office and is ready to be rented!!
The Firminator G-3 will do all the necessary work of planting from start to finish. This machine is ground driven and can be used with an ATV (500+CC Motor), UTV, or small tractor. It handles seeds of all sizes from the tiniest of clovers up to corn, soybeans, peas, sunflowers and everything in between! The Firminator G-3 can be used to plant food plots, filter strips, pastures, lawns, and other conservation plantings.

7' Great Plains No Till Drill (with warm season box)

Gallia SWCD recently purchased a 6-foot Great Plains 606 NT drill. This drill will allow renters the ability to plant warm season grasses to suit their management strategies and conservation needs. The rental rate is a $60.00 minimum deposit, which covers the first 5 acres. After the first 5 acres, the rate is $12.00/acre. Warm seasons grasses can be utilized for many purposes such as grazing, wildlife food plots, erosion control, and lawns. If you are thinking about planting warm season grasses on your property, here are pros and cons associated with them:

Pros (Benefits)

Heat & Drought Tolerance: Excellent performance during hot, dry summer months, requiring less water than cool-season grasses.
Deep Roots: Native varieties develop extensive root systems that improve soil health, prevent erosion, and enhance water infiltration.
Low Maintenance (Fertilizer): Generally need less nitrogen fertilizer compared to cool-season grasses.
Wildlife Benefits: Provide excellent habitat, forage, and nesting sites for pollinators, songbirds, and deer.
Mid-Summer Growth: Complement cool-season grasses by providing forage when they are less productive.
Good for Poor Soils: Some types (like switchgrass) can tolerate low fertility, low pH, and low phosphorus soils.

Cons (Drawbacks)

Cold Dormancy: Turn brown and go dormant (look dead) when temperatures drop below 50-60°F, which happens for a significant part of the year in Ohio.
Slow Establishment: Can be slow to establish and green up in the spring.
Aesthetics: The winter dormancy can be unattractive for traditional lawn aesthetics.
Competition: Can be easily outcompeted by earlier-growing cool-season grasses if planted in mixtures.
Management Shift: Requires different management strategies (like delayed nitrogen application) than cool-season grasses.
